Real Estate Projects in Mauritius: Are They Pet-Friendly?

When considering relocation, foreigners often wonder about the possibility and conditions for bringing their pets to Mauritius. So the question is – is the property market pet-friendly in Mauritius?

Yes, but it can be more complex than expected to bring your pet companion with you on the island.

Your pet is generally allowed in most places where you have enclosed gardens, except for new developments with open gardens where they could pose a safety or nuisance issue. Let’s get into the details.

Conditions to Bring Your Pet to Mauritius*

If you find the property market pet-friendly in Mauritius and are considering taking your dog to Mauritius, it is important to ensure that all necessary conditions are met before your departure. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Before travelling, your dog must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before your departure, but not more than 12 months in advance.
  • Your dog must also be identified by an electronic microchip compliant with IS 11784/11785 standards or by a clearly legible tattoo.
  • A pet passport issued by an authorised veterinarian is required.
  • Before travelling, your dog must receive recent treatment against parasites and a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian attesting to its good health and fitness for travel.

If the property market is pet-friendly to dogs, it can be to cats as well. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Fill out and sign an application form from the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Livestock and Animal Health Division.
  • Attach a letter of motivation detailing the purpose of your trip to Mauritius, as well as your residency status.
  • Include a copy of your cat’s vaccination record, showing the latest vaccinations.
  • Provide a sterilisation certificate, except for animals intended for breeding.
  • Imported cats for breeding must have a pedigree certificate.
  • Submit a copy of your passport or identity card.
  • Before travelling, your cat must undergo a rabies neutralising antibody titration test, with a waiting period of four weeks after rabies vaccination.
  • Upon arrival in Mauritius, inform the ministry four days in advance of your arrival time and flight number. A broker must be present at the airport for customs formalities, or your animal may be returned at your expense.
  • Your cat will be quarantined for at least 5 days at the quarantine station in Reduit.

Challenges in Finding Pet-Friendly Accommodations

In Mauritius, not all property developers accept pets in their projects. Some have strict regulations in place to prevent noise disturbance, mess, and to ensure the safety of common areas and children, where pets could potentially be a nuisance.

However, other developments have a more pet-friendly policy, allowing owners to enjoy the company of their pets in a residential setting.

Relaxed Pet Policies in Rental Properties: A Myth or Reality?

Generally speaking, standalone houses and villas, even in gated communities, that are open for long-term rentals, offer options that are suitable for pet owners. This trend shows that rental policies are more relaxed, making the property market pet-friendly in Mauritius.
